OUR STORY
This is a Table for all who are hungry. If you are hungry – come. - Laura Jean Truman
“This is what God’s kingdom is like: a bunch of outcasts and oddballs gathered at a table, not because they are rich or worthy or good, but because they are hungry because they said yes. And there’s always room for more.” - Rachel Held Evans
The Table was born out of a desire for an authentic community. Raised in conservative Nigerian churches, co-founders Ore and Kamsy found each other online in their search for a more inclusive and dynamic spirituality that could hold space for their doubt, questions, and longings. While serving as campus ministry leaders in their different colleges, Ore and Kamsy simultaneously embarked on their faith deconstruction journeys. Frustrated by the socially regressive, anti-feminist, exclusionary, and deeply conservative stances of mainstream Nigerian Christianity, they began sharing about their spiritual journeys online, where they met fellow spiritual misfits and wanderers existing at the periphery of orthodox Christianity.
Confronted by their experiences of loneliness during their individual faith deconstruction journeys, they recognized the need for support and community that could not be found in traditional organized religion. Their mutual revelation led them to found The Table - A community for Nigerians on their faith deconstruction journeys. A space intended for individuals who realize that the world is not as black and white as they were taught to believe and now exist within the grey, where they are forging their unique spiritual paths outside of traditional religious institutions.
